Kids in a New Groove is a 501c3 non-profit that seeks to enrich and enhance the lives of foster childrenby nurturing their hearts and minds through music. In a sense, Kids in a New Groove grew out of Flyer Records, a small independent label in Austin, Texas, where the bands Alpha Rev and Ruby Summer had been signed. Even as these bands began to flourish, the music business proved ultimately unsatisfying on many levels. Flyer then began a grassroots effort to channel the power of music in a more positive and meaningful way, by seeking to help Austin’s foster children. Word began to spread, and kids came into the program from other nearby cities. As you will read below, our teachers involved in the program were surprised to see how quickly the program had a positive influence on their students.
"My KING students generally appear to be very excited to have an opportunity that they seem to realize they otherwise would not be afforded, were it not for this program. These kids seem to be at the mercy and whim of so many different people in their lives, and I feel they appreciate the consistency of my weekly visits."
Kids in a New Groove now provides children in the foster care system with private music instruction, and offers several different types of lessons based on the child’s chosen area. We are currently providing lessons only to children in central Texas, but will be expanding to other areas in the near future. Many of our children are referred through CASA volunteers or CPS caseworkers. If you are interested in submitting a child for the program, please read our FAQfor further information.
